Mexican Americans and women at higher risk for subarachnoid hemorrhage during stroke than white men

Recent research suggests that Mexican Americans and women may be at higher risk for experiencing a stroke in which there is bleeding in the space around the brain, according to the National Institute of Health. Researchers reviewed over 30,000 health records of people over the age of 44, living in Southeast Texas. They found that Mexican Americans have almost double the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage than Caucasians. They also found that women had one-and-three-quarters-fold increased risk of the same kind of stroke.

LATINA of the Month

Carla Mossman
Carla Mossman’s story is one of inspiration. After ending a marriage of 11 years, Carla found herself alone with three children. She took a job in a small seafood import company, owned by her mentor. Here she had the opportunity to learn the “in’s and out’s” of international trade and the seafood import business. In the fall of 2005, her mentor offered her the opportunity start her own seafood import business- which she did! Her company, Aqua Nova Seafood Inc. now has sales in excess of $15 million annually and still operates out of her hometown Taos, NM. Carla’s story demonstrates the importance of taking a chance and having a mentor to guide you.
