During the Friends of Justice Sonia Sotomayor reception back in October to honor the newly-appointed Supreme Court Justice, the USHCC launched the Latina Leadership Initiative - a comprehensive program that provides current and aspiring Latina business owners with access to the tools, resources and information necessary to establish themselves in a competitive business environment.

With Justice Sotomayor as the finest example of grace, dedication, integrity and intellect, the USHCC guaranteed their commitment to the Latina Leadership Initiative and applauded the role Latina entrepreneurs play in the U.S. economy.

Recent reports show Hispanics more at risk of Alzheimer’s. Lack of understanding of the disease is considered part of the problem, as Latinos more often mistake dementia symptoms for normal aging, delaying diagnosis. This month, don’t miss La Guia Holistica para la Enfermedad de Alzheimer by Zoe A Lewis, M.D., author, speaker, and Alzheimer’s disease education activist.

The book covers a multitude of care and care giving issues for both the patient and caregiver facing a dementia diagnosis and it’s also available in English under the name I Hope They Know: The Essential Handbook for Alzheimer’s Care.

Thanksgiving or Dia de Accion de Gracias is just around the corner, and if you were looking to add a traditional Puerto Rican flare to your Thanksgiving dinner, this is the recipe for you.

Roast Turkey (Pavochon) and Mofongo stuffing

Ingredients

For the Turkey:

Adobo seasoning
Sazon
Fresh Garlic
Olive Oil
Mofongo stuffing:
6 large green platanos
1/3 cup of chicken broth
4tsp of chopped garlic
One pound of bacon chopped and cooked
3 sweet chili peppers (chopped)
¼ cup olive oil

http://www.latinastyle.com/e-newsletter/2009/nov/turkey.jpg

Directions
1. Defrost the turkey
2. Season the turkey the day before by combining 2 heads of garlic (crushed), 4 tablespoons of olive oil, at least 2 packets of Sazon and about 2 tablespoon of Adobo. Spread the rub between the turkey skin and the meat and over the outside-skin of the turkey.
3. Roast the turkey

Mofongo Stuffing
To make mofongo stuffing, combine the chopped bacon, garlic, olive oil and chopped peppers. Next, using a pilon (like a mortar and pestle), mash the platanos with the olive oil mixture. Finally, add chicken broth to your mofongo for moisture and you are ready to stuff the turkey.

An estimated 20 percent of Hispanics online are considered ‘Hispanic-fluentials’. According to a recent piece by BodenPR on the level of engagement of U.S. Hispanics with social media, results show U.S. Hispanic market segments – Generation Y and Baby Boomers – are consuming information online more than ever before. So, if you don’t have your Facebook account set up to keep in touch with friends yet, or aren’t reading the online reviews on the next best-seller and commenting about it, it seems like it’s time to catch on!
